Death of Maj-Gen Sir Luke O’Connor VC KCB, 1915

Luke O’Connor enlisted in the RWF in 1849 aged 17. He became a sergeant in 1850. In 1854 he was awarded a VC for his valour at The Alma, in the Crimea, where he was commissioned in the field. He accompanied 2 RWF in the Ashanti campaign and succeeded to command of the battalion in 1880. He retired in 1887 with the rank of Maj-Gen. He was made a CB in 1906, a KCB in 1913, and became Colonel of the Regiment in 1914. At his death he was aged 84.

  1. you left out the fact that he was born in County Roscommon, Ireland and he was the first soldier to be awarded the Victoria Cross
